As the premier specialty contacts clinic in the Reno area, Visionary Eye Center is equipped to handle the most challenging lens fittings and designs. We have had patients from all over the west coast come to our clinic to be fit in the specialty designs we offer. We often work with patients for which contact lenses are a medical necessity due to an underlying conditions like keratoconus and corneal disfigurement. Note though that the design or material of specialty contact lens is not what makes it medically necessary, rather it is the need for improved visual correction that defines medical necessity.
What To Expect When Being Fit For Specialty Contacts
Our goals are to optimally correct your vision while providing acceptable tolerance of the lenses while avoiding any compromise to the health of your eye. Often specialty designs and materials are needed to achieve the goal of improved vision.
Designing specialty contacts is necessary to provide the best visual correction and comfort can be difficult, expensive and time consuming. It can take many lens trials and the fitting process can take months or even years to achieve our goals. Sometimes a combination of different contact lenses and glasses are needed to meet our objective.
Despite our best efforts there are conditions that cause us to be unable to meet all of our goals. This is frustrating for both the patient and the doctor. At the Visionary Eye Center we promise to exhaust every option to help you see better.
What Technologies Are Used To Fit Specialty Contact Lenses?
Computerized Corneal Topography
Corneal topography provides us with elevation and curvature measurements of the cornea. This data can be used to precisely design corneal contact lenses for the most accurate fit, vision and comfort using the latest in computer aided drafting software.
Optical Coherence Tomography
We are proud to be the only office in Nevada that offers wide field anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanning with our Visante Omni OCT . This laser scanning device allows us to greatly enhance our ability to fit even the most difficult of eyes. With this technology we are able to measure the scleral tissue beyond the cornea, reducing the time and number of trial lenses necessary to fit large style designs.
Anterior Segment Photography
To better document the fit and improve communication with our manufacturing laboratories we will often take digital images of the fit of the lenses on the eye. Using special dyes, we can even image the tear film underneath the lens to assess the alignment of lens to the cornea and sclera.

Many of the services provided by our specialty clinic to design your contact lenses may be covered by either your vision discount plan or medical insurance. Unfortunately there are still many insurances that view all contact lenses to be a cosmetic luxury and the not the medical device they truly are. We will be more than happy to help you determine your benefits, including writing letters of medical necessity.
